Rally in Mendiola

MuLanAy (reflection)

A film that shows the true face of reality and conviction; dignity, dedication, loyalty as its soul. An inspiring one whereas it really tackles the society’s need for sympathy. A gradual change of being new into something usual. A heart with the passion to help; and the passion to change for the betterment. A positive outlook and an open heart. A truly remarkable film with heart and compassion.

Ria Espinosa (Ms. Jacklyn Jose) portrayed the role of a newly licensed doctor who ought to join the “doctor to the barrios” organization to help the places where there is a need for medical assistances. There she met Norma (Ms. Gina Alajar) a midwife located in the Barrio of Mulanay in Quezon. Norma became her buddy as she stayed on the said place.

As the time passes by, she came to realize that health is not the only problem of the barrio. Many other concerns should be considered. The light supply, the water system, the environmental threats, cleanliness and orderliness of the barrio’s properties, etc.

She then enlisted all those possibilities that made the barrio severely in need of health assistance. Analyzed all the causes why mostly the people on the barrio have had the same illness.

It took her a hard time to get used in the area. Most people treat her as a VIP. An untouchable in a positive manner, criticizing her ironically. The separated culture of having an “albularyo” in the area competes with her dedication. Getting the attention and trust of the people became an issue. Her effectiveness and the rational thinking of the citizens.

But then it was never been too long for her to get used in the barrio. The people already knew her. Took her services openly; and treat her as a co-barrio fellowmen.

Norma and Her decided to call for a meeting that concerns’ the betterment of the barrio. She needs their help and cooperation. She advised to set all things in order. And convinced the fellowmen to build a deep-well for she found out that the cause of most diseases in the barrio were due to the water system. Many asked her about where should the funds go from.

Some days have passed and she decided to go back to Manila, to get some sponsors for her plans, and other possible help from her connections.

Decided to go back to the barrio, the new revelations moved her and so as new challenges tested her dedication….

It was a film that made me think of different things. Should I or should I not? I asked. At first I was just watching the movie for the sake of making this reflection. But I realized though the film was made years ago, the message was immortalized. An eye-opener that nothing will happen unless we move or somebody will move. It was like a spark, that when it started to flame up, it will crawl up to its end point. The same as the main character did. She demanded for a change as so the community then follows. But thinking of the spark, it will or will not finish the route unless it is being taken care of, a wet part may prevent it form going so as on the film. Every second counts. And as long as the plans weren’t that established, there’s no space for a happy-go-lucky and a so-be-it reasoning.

Everything needs everyone. It reminds me of a quotation “there’s no “I” on team”. Even a move in a simplest manner will help a lot. Though pursuing this kind of passion will be hard, your dedication and will to help would give you the strength to keep moving.

There are probabilities that you will somehow feel defeat, but still as long as you are willing to help, everything shall sail smoothly even on the harsh parts of the adventure.

The path of being a public servant might be hard but seeing faces of happiness will mean a lot. A happy community would be enough as to compensate yours and the community’s hardships.

Till then you can proudly say, you love what you are doing, it’s your passion, it’s your mission and not just for some reason.

God bless us all….
